Camp Oglethorpe in Macon, Georgia is a Confederate Civil War prison that housed Union prisoners of war, and in many ways, the prison is a shadow of the infamous Andersonville Prison. Camp Oglethorpe held a population of 1,000 prisoners and was 15 to 20 acres large. The prison was basically one big stockade where conditions were very poor, as sanitation was often neglected and diseases spread fast amongst the prisoners and guards alike. An official death toll for Camp Oglethorpe prison is unknown, and in 1864, most of its prisoners were relocated to other Confederate prisons due to Union cavalry raids.
