An oblique order is a military tactic in which an attacking army focuses the majority of its forces on a single enemy flank, while using the remainder to fix the enemy line. This tactic allowed an army of lesser or equal force to achieve superiority in numbers, and the army can then try to defeat the enemy in detail (meaning the eventual destruction of one enemy force).
